Abstract

O presente artigo procura analisar a atuação política oposicionista de Joaquim Francisco de Assis Brasil no Rio Grande do Sul no início da década de 1920 em oposição ao Partido Republicano Rio-grandense (PRR) e ao que seria o quinto mandato consecutivo de Borges de Medeiros. A atuação política de Assis Brasil, embora se colocasse na oposição, tinha um caráter conservador liberal que não se diferenciava como ele mesmo afirmava. Desta maneira, confrontamos o discurso de Assis Brasil, principalmente seus escritos políticos com a sua prática política, vinculando-os à explicação de sua candidatura ao governo do Rio Grande do Sul em 1922, capitaneando a oposição a Borges de Medeiros.
