The Law of Mato Grosso’s dismemberment was signed by the President Ernesto Geisel in 1977. This article presents the conflicts during this time frame between politicians who worked in two very near locations: Dourados and Campo Grande, in the southern region of Mato Grosso; as well as the relations of these public agents with the newspapers O Progresso and Correio do Estado. This research analyzed the speeches conveyed by these news in order to understand the plurality situation in the social, political and journalistic fields and the confrontations that do not allow us to designate “the southerners” as a cohesive and homogeneous group. In order to better understand the power struggles and regionalist defenses carried out, all the articles published in the two periodicals that year were used as main sources. The corpus documents allowed a critical study of the publications and the representations expressed in them. With theoretical and methodological contributions from the New Cultural History and the New Political History, it was possible to verify, in the journalistic narratives and in the political discourses, the manipulation of ambivalent elements that showed a greater complexity than the dichotomy, “northerners versus southerners”. And to prove whether these public agents, determined to occupy new spaces of power and associated with different political projects, maintained close relations with the press (and vice versa) to manipulate aspects of regional identification and differentiation, using a privileged space for the defense of their own interests.
