Abstract

This article aims to analyze the contributions of the doctor, Clidenor de Freitas Santos, to Piauí psychiatry in a context of modernization in Teresina, capital of Piauí. From the bibliographic study and the investigation of sources such as newspapers, reports and chronicles, it is possible to understand how the doctor arrives in the city in a scenario of lack of assistance to the mental health of that population, reforms the administration of the old institution for the treatment of the insane, establishes therapeutic methods hitherto unknown in the region and builds its own hospital, the Meduna Sanatorium, for the assistance of psychotics. With significant contributions, he becomes an important name in Piauí psychiatry.
