Abstract

Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar certo episódio do romance Grande Sertão: Veredas, de João Guimarães Rosa, comumente conhecido e denominado como julgamento de Zé Bebelo, pensando-o como alegoria de momento singular da história republicana nacional, buscando refletir a respeito das convulsões político-institucionais que marcaram a passagem do Império para a República, na qual atraso e modernidade ocupavam seus papéis encarnando respectivamente uma nostálgica ordem imperial e progressista ordem republicana. Pretende-se enfim, compreender até que ponto o espaço conformado em Grande Sertão: Veredas alegoriza a confrontação entre as dimensões rural e urbana contrastantes na tentativa de estabelecerem sua identidade, num momento de transição política e ideológica para a nação.
