Jatropha curcas growth and productivity under different phosphorus doses

The objective of the present study was to identify and recommend the adequate phosphate fertilization for the growth and productivity of plants of J. curcas. The experiments were conducted in two years using plants of J. curcas at four months of age implanted in the spacing of 4x2 m. A randomized block design with five treatments (phosphorus doses equal to 0, 75, 150, 225 and 300 Kg ha-1) was used in a randomized block design in plot plots and years of evaluations in the subplots, five replications and a plot of two plants. Triple superphosphate was used as a source of phosphorus (P2O5) and the doses were divided into five monthly applications started in the first year in November and in the second year in October after the first rain. The results justify the need for special attention to phosphate fertilization because it interferes decisively in the vigor and productivity of plants of J. curcas. The high number of stomata and vigorous vegetative growth of plants of J. curcas were obtained with fertilization at doses between 180 and 225 kg ha-1 of P2O5. It is recommended for the plant of J. curcas the phosphate fertilization at the dose of 208 kg ha-1 of P2O5 to obtain productivity around 140 kg ha-1 in the 1st year of cultivation and 214 kg ha-1 of P2O5 to obtain of productivity around 600 kg ha-1 in the second year of cultivation.
