 CALL FOR PAPERS: SPECIAL ISSUE “FRONTIER AND NATIONAL DEFENSE: INTEGRATED SECURITY AND HUMANITARIAN AID”

Monções, International Relations Journal from the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) (ISSN 23168323) is selecting articles for the Special Issue “Frontier and National Defense: Integrated Security and Humanitarian Aid”. The Journal accepts unpublished articles in Portuguese, Spanish, French or English. The submission deadline is March 15, 2021. Submissions’ guidelines are available on:  http://ojs.ufgd.edu.br/index.php/moncoes/about/submissions#authorGuidelines.

Themes such as Frontiers, Defense, Security and Migration have always been present in several studies in the field of Social Sciences, International Relations and other areas of knowledge. In the last decades, the increasing complexity of global phenomena, such as the forced international migration, and of actors, such as mercenaries, made clear the need for interdisciplinary actions and approaches on such issues. Thus, the concepts of frontiers, national defense, integrated security and humanitarian aid have been revalued, when not resignified. They emerged as main locus of the international actors’ actions and the epicenter of global events.

Based on the above, we seek to define the following scope for this Thematic Special Issue: Frontier and National Defense: Integrated Security and Humanitarian Aid in South America.

The Special Issue seeks to engage those who are dedicated to studies on national defense, integrated security and humanitarian aid to publish works on topics such as:

a)    Frontiers in South America: cooperation in defense and security;

b)    Humanitarian aid in South America and transnational migration;

c)    Opportunities and challenges related to security and defense in the three arches of the Brazilian frontier;

d)    Cybernetic and technological frontiers in Brazil and in South American countries;

e)    Restrictions and Cooperation in South American Frontiers Post-Covid-19;

f)      Health and epidemiological challenges (Biosafety) to human security;

g)    The role of the South American armed forces on the frontiers;

h)    Post-pandemic threats and challenges in South America (frontiers, security and humanitarian aid);

i)      Brazil’s development and integration with the strategic environment.

Considering that this special number of Monções seeks to provide inputs for different approaches on national defense, integrated security and humanitarian aid in International Relations, Political Science, Geography, among others, we invite researchers focused on the analysis of the themes under discussion to participate in the Special Issue.

Regarding the suggestions of themes to the authors, we hope to receive original contributions on:

1)    Integrated Security, how to suggest effective public policies able to promote the integration of different sectors and actors;

2)    Conceptual and empirical discussions about the challenges of Operation Welcome in the post-Covid19;

3)    The opportunities and challenges related to security and defense in the three arches of the Brazilian frontier;

4)    Brazil's strategic environment and contemporary strategic challenges, such as issues on biosafety;

5)    Studies on new topics (e.g. cybersecurity) and the actors of defense and international security (e.g. mercenaries).

Deadline for articles receipt: March 15, 2021

Launch of the Special Issue: until December 2021
