Opciones reproductivas en el contexto africano y urbano poscolonial: el caso de Maputo, la capital de Mozambique

Resumen

El artículo analiza cómo las experiencias del urbanismo en el contexto africano postcolonial dan forma a las opciones reproductivas. Empleando un enfoque metodológico cualitativo, a menudo pasado por alto en estudios de fertilidad en África, el análisis sugiere que el deseo o la creencia en el beneficio socioeconómico de tener una familia pequeña son motivaciones convincentes para reducir voluntariamente el número de niños. Sin embargo, la autonomía de las personas y los factores institucionales (condicionados por la estructura social) determinan las oportunidades de opciones alternativas para lograr el tamaño familiar deseado. Es decir, el número de oportunidades para actuar (sociológicamente) es determinante de las opciones reproductivas. La conclusión es que las disparidades en la fertilidad intraurbana, un problema que ha merecido atención limitada en África y Mozambique en particular, son el resultado de diferencias en el acceso a las oportunidades de tomar decisiones reproductivas.
