Language Variety. Textbook. Critical education.Abstract
Based on the theory that schools are instances that must not only respect and appraise students as well as analyze and consider their needs, this paper grounds on Sociolinguistics (CYRANKA, 2014; FARACO, 2015) from a critical perspective (HAWKINS & NORTON, 2009) in the endeavor to unveil how certain concepts on language variety are applied to a well-known Brazilian textbook. The document analysis consists of three volumes of Cereja & Magalhães’s Linguagens: português textbook, which are distributed to Brazilian state schools. The outcomes point out that such textbook includes, overall, consistent Sociolinguistics concepts. However, it avoids stigmatized language varieties and does not relate them to relations of power.Downloads
